April Fools Day post (yes, it's a joke)

This was the "every 4 years" COF April Fools joke. 1 item MIGHT be true, but needs verification . The rest of the article is false (as far as I know!).

Got a call late tonight from an old friend and 100% reliable source that I haven't heard from in a long time. He/She had just had a very interesting discussion with a member of the band and knew that I would want to hear this. Anyway, here's the current plan for the coming months:

North American tour will be much like the European Tour, but about 30 minutes shorter. The band felt the 3 hour shows were a bit much, so will try 2 and a half hours. The good news is that the shows will be less pop, with some real surprises being added to the set. There will also be a rotation of 6 songs from the new album.

Lol has been invited to some of the California shows. And not just as a guest....hmmm.

Expect 3-5 "secret shows" during the NA tour. No publicity AT ALL. They are being called Sneak Attack Shows. That will be your only clue about them. Check the local papers and street flyers. NYC and LA clubs are confirmed, but expect a couple in "unique places" in "unique cities". And one other thing, be sure to go to the bathroom, get a drink or just hang around an hour after the show. You might just find something very interesting. NIN fans will understand.

The band is booked for the Jimmy Kimmel show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

Album is 99.13% confirmed to be titled 'Thirteen', with 13 forming the T and E. It's a Porl/Parched Art design. Cover design is said to be brilliant. The band/Robert are not pictured on it.

Album release will be after the completion of the NA Tour, possibly end of June, but more likely in early to mid July (yes, in 2008, smart asses).

The album is really going to surprise people (in a good way). Maybe a bit too upbeat for some, but the dark stuff is better than anything they've done before. And guess what? There's some keyboards and piano on a few songs! Robert plays both.

Album will be released in at least 4 formats:
Single cd (the Geffen mix) with DVD bonus
Double CD box set (the Robert mix) with DVD and Book bonus
Vinyl box set (8 LPs and Book bonus)
Download only version of the Robert mix with additional tracks (demos, scratch tracks, remixes, live).

European Festivals are being added as we speak. Expect at least 10 festival shows. Maybe a few non-festivals too, as the European tour sold VERY well. And the setlists WILL be different from the 4Tour.

South America MIGHT be added after the European festivals, though it looks unlikely right now.

Expect even bigger plans for 2009. Isn't there a very special anniversary next year? The band may be even busier than in '08. The release schedule DEFINITELY will be.

There's much more, but it's getting late/early. If I get permission, I might put up the recording of the call.

Thanks so much to my old friend (lets call him/her April Phoolz) for providing all of this great info.

Again, this was the 2008 April Fool's joke. See you again in 2012!

  1. I remember I was fooled by the 1st of April joke last year ;) No way now, though! But the try was nice! laughed!

  2. I would be so pissed if this was an April Fool's joke, especially given that we've all been desperately awaiting for any drop of news on the new album.

  3. For the sake of my sanity, please tell me this is not an April Fools joke ... although the 8 LP's bit - let alone Lol on keys again - has me thinking otherwise. Why would you do that to me Craig? Why?

    ReplyDelete
  4. That was my point. I know it's April 1st, but we have been DYING for any tidbit of news about the new album and it's just uncool to tease us in this manner. Is there any real news on the new album? It's April and the official site is still 3 years out of date.

  5. Don't mean to start an argument, but people ARE dying in Darfour and all over the world....we are not really "dying" to hear news from the new album(it would be nice but..que sera, sera, as they say in France)...It would be funny if this was not an April fools's joke...it does start well i must say, very believable..someone proves me wrong?

  6. i think i was most upset at a 2.5 hour show vs 3 hours. blaspheme!

  7. %$%^&$&^%$%##@%$ I used to love April Fools as a kid! >:(

  8. If this really is an April Fool's joke, then I'm coming to New Orleans and stringing Craig up by his toes in the French Quarter. :P

    ReplyDelete
  9. But really there's nothing too far-fetched about any of this news... even an 8 LP vinyl is not a far stretch (if there is indeed a vinyl release at all)...
Well, except maybe the hint of looking for USB drives in bathrooms and such... but most of the update actually downplays any rabidly silly over-the-top april fools day like news...

  10. Perfect.Murder, obviously people use well-known expressions. For example, it's raining cats and dogs out here in Rhode Island today. So, yes, I'm "dying" for the new Cure album.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I know...it's just that life goes on, i think, and whether we get an album in June , August or November makes no difference to me.....

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh. Fool me once shame on you...And so forth. That business about Lol being invited as something more than a guest clinched it for me.

  14. Life does go on but I'm sick of the delays. It would be one thing if it was delayed once, but this thing has been delayed numerous times with lots of empty promises. Even the re-issues have been delayed. When did the last onces come out, 3 years ago? I just think it's odd that Robert is so unaplogetic about it. I also think it's the height of apathy that he doesn't even bother to spruce up the "official" site at all to make it seem fresh. For the love of God, get that Festival (2005) ad off of there and put something, anything, up about the new material. I mean, doesn't he want to generate any buzz?

    ReplyDelete
  15. it can't ALL be an april fools joke, right? :@ RIGHT???

    ReplyDelete
  16. Take a deep breath, JPX. Getting frustrated about the delays is not going to make the release occur any quicker, it's only going to make you miserable. When the album is ready, it will be released, but until then we can't do anything about it. So for now, just avoid the official site until Craig posts that it's been updated, and look forward to the shows next month! :)

  17. Everything you say is true, v. I'm just annoyed at the April Fool's joke.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Craig, if this IS an April Fool's joke.... Well. Why?

    ReplyDelete
  19. What a joke!!!!!!

    Don´t do this, Craig.

    8lp´s, Lol, 2 and a half concerts...

    Why, Craig?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, Craig. How dare you have a sense of humor, on this day of all days! We all know that The Cure is NOT a laughing matter - especially when it comes to details about their new album! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Exactly, v!

    I know you're joking =)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nice. I fell for one of your April Fool's Day tricks once. Not again. I did laugh out loud though.

Also, there's no point in getting upset about this, at least it gives us something interesting to read while we wait for the NA tour to start.

    ReplyDelete
  23. OMG - I just saw an ad in the latest edition of Westword for a show called "Sneak Attack" at the Gothic Theatre in Englewood. Could it be one of the secret Cure shows?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  24. You are so cruel!!!
    I was excited with the 8 LP's
    hahahaa

    Grrrrrrrrrrr

    ReplyDelete
  25. "100% reliable source" is when my hope failed me (I realize it should have been when I was reading the date). Funny though, I smiled. Thanks for generating the conversation Craig....

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh such a mean joke, though a good one< i almost bought it until i saw the 8lp thing and of course the april foolz thing...dammit! I was so excited! kudos for the humour....a bit like the last time when a new single "Everything Forever" was supposedly the latest treat...

    ha ha!

now some real news please you beggars! for the sake of us all, esp JPX

    ReplyDelete
  27. i listened to 'disintegration' tonight, and man does it hold up. i love this band til i die, folks. cure 08. represent.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I suspected as much since you removed the comments section. I'll never forget the last time you pulled that in 2004 or so. I just hope your predictions about a great album prove true!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes, real news on the new album please!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Best song title from the '04 April Fools: "Heavy World"

    Go Craig!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Now we have to guess which part of the story might be true?

Album being delayed until Mid July is a good bet.

Also, it wouldn't surprise me if the new album actually is going to be called "Thirteen". It would be the least inspired name for an album since, well, "The Cure"

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm going to guess the European festival dates are the true part...though I'd like it to be that Robert is playing some keys... :)

I desperately hope the true part isn't that they're not going to play 3 hour shows in the States, but I think I know better on that one. ;)

Anyway, thanks for the joke, Craig. :D 'Twas a good laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't mind if the album is called "13" as long as their are no songs like the wretched "The 13th" on it.

I like the idea of it being themed with 13 tracks on either side and themes of 13 thruout....but who knows? it might end up being 9 tracks and all bloody like 'Mint Car'...but i hope not!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Heavy World is a real song, not made up. One of the unreleased tracks from the Bloodflowers sessions. It might turn up on the remastered Bloodflowers cd. Look for it in 2010. : )

    ReplyDelete
  35. And yes, the part that might be true is the possibility of Euro Festivals. I have one date now, but no confirmation. Should know on friday if it's true.

The bit about some keyboards and piano on the album, Robert did say that last year, but who knows if those tracks will make the cut?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I was buying it until the bit about Lol ... then I knew it was over

    Very clever!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Why? Lol and Robert made up years ago, and he has been the guest of the band at a couple of shows in the last 8 years.
You mean the insinuation that he would be playing with the band? Hell, you never know. Who would have ever guessed that Postman Frank would appear on stage with them?

    ReplyDelete
  38. good one craig! I didn't read it until late last night, had already forgotten about the date...and you had me until the "april phoolz" :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Craig, I admire your optimism.

But the "Bloodflowers" re-master? We'll have flying cars, robot housekeepers and $49 fares to Venus before we see that baby :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Dumb, we already have 2 of those 3 (you have to know the right people to get the flying car though), so it's just around the corner. : )

Seriously though, Did you see the new tour book? It says the next 6 re-masters (Disintegration, Entreat, Mixed Up, Wish, Show, Paris) will be out this year. And Wild Mood Swings and Bloodflowers scheduled for 2009.

Now if you believe all of that, I've got a flying car to sell you. : )

But I have faith that the first 3 on that list WILL make it out this year.

    ReplyDelete
  41. When you have a look at the Trilogy-Package you will see that Disintegration & Bloodflowers (both remastered) have already been released in 2004.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow, totally forgot about that. So they are only 4-5 years behind schedule...so far.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The part I would have liked most to be true is the one about Lol. I'd be so glad to have him back in the band (and the band to have a keyboard player again).
