Those 2 new songs from the KC show

"I can give no more info on the new songs, except to say that both of them were far better than the other new songs we've heard (which are also great). The first one (Underneath The Stars?) is very Disintegration-like, and the second one was seriously rock- it followed the best 100 Years I've ever heard, and started so loudly that it actually made 100 Years pale in comparison, I kid you not. It was phenomenal."
(Thanks JS)

  1. Now this is a torture. Well, let's hope they play these two new songs tomorrow.

This may sound crazy, but I’m almost 100% certain that I'll love the song "Underneath the Stars" if it's the opener of the show.

  2. Cool! Thanks, JS. In a way, hearing the descriptions is more fun than hearing a sample, though that may just be my compulsion to delay gratification.

Although I find it pretty hard to judge a song by its usually inferior live version (because subtlety and sound are harder to hear for me), I suspect Freakshow could be quite good.

The only exception is the wave file of "The Only One" from Mexico uploaded back in September. I actually think that sounds better than the single version of that song, which sounds seems to bury the jangly guitar in the background. Am I crazy to think it's better?

  3. muldfeld, I prefer the live version of "the Only One", it shows the songs potential much better.
Is the US version any better (than Mix 13)?

  4. It seems they are playing the Mix 13 version on the current tour. You can hear Porl's guitar line from the beginning which was missing on the Euro leg.

Also in Europe the song lasted about 4:40 and it seems to have been cut a bit..

Does RS still do the 'OOOOOOoooooo' 'OOOOoooooo' bits?

  5. Jenny, I'm with you. Something about the title, "Underneath the Stars" just makes it sound like a winner and very Curish. Okay, I guess I'm crazy too!

  6. I'm drooling all over the place at the mere mention of these songs being dreamy and heavy. Mmmm mmmmmm mmmmm. I love Cure-metal, I truly do.

If they play these songs tonight someone better record them, or there will be hell to pay! I've got "connections" in all parts of the USA.

    CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.

  7. As for The Only One live... yes, I think some of the live versions sound MUCH better. I just can't get into the studio version at all. It's catchy and runs through my head all day, but I don't LIKE it. I don't know how to explain that apparent paradox.

However, the mix is much better than the mix on most TC songs.

But EOTW was a much better song.

  8. Oh I Love, Love, Love The studio version of The Only One. The again I have loved the song since I first heard it anyway.

How much more summer-esque could that song be?

  9. I really WANT to like it, and I liked it at first, but something about it rubs me the wrong way. It has no soul, or something. There's nothing WRONG with it per se - it has all the elements of great Cure-pop: solid hook, falsetto singing, Dr. Seussy rhymes laced with yummy erotica...but I just really don't like it. I can't explain why. Maybe it's just way too familiar, given its too-close kinship with High. In fact, it's like High mixed with EOTW - and I like both of those songs much better than this one.

  10. Clockwise, I like it when you purr! I'm with you, Andrew, I liked The Only One as soon as I heard it, but then again, I'm a sucker for pop-cure (I even like Mint Car, let the stoning begin). I really like everything I've heard from the new album so far and I think it's shaping up to be their best album since Wish (fingers crossed hard!).

  11. It's strange really how most people really love the new stuff with the exception of The Only One and to a lesser extent Freakshow.

People are divided on those tracks but everything else has got us excited as 8 year olds.

  12. jpx, my COF prom buddy! :-)

I normally LOVE Cure-pop, even Mint Car, EVEN The 13th, EVEN Gone. I rarely dislike Cure-pop, but on TC I immensely disliked Taking Off, because it was just too much of a lakcluster facsimile of JLH. And I dislike The Only One, I think, because it's too "familiar" sounding. It doesn't really take signature Cure-pop elements into new directions, like EOTW did. But I agree with Andrew that fans are divided about The Only One and Freakshow, but seem to almost unanimously love Perfect Boy, Sleep When I'm Dead, and NY Trip and ABINK. Actually, I really like Freakshow, too, but ABINK had to grow on me. Now I miss it from the sets. And I do love PB and SWID - those are the strongest new songs, IMO.

  13. Yeah and the Kansas city songs are getting good reviews as well (despite a bad voice). I think everyone should be excited about the new album even if it isn't dark and gloomy.

  14. The Only One is very catchy, but lyrically it's kind of weak at certain points in the song. Either way i can't help but love it. The mix is done really well too besides it'd be nice if the bass was a tad louder. As for these two new songs played in KC. Damnit it want to hear them now.

    ReplyDelete
  15. ....oh and also, NY Trip is a great B-side. I love the OWWWWWWWWWW part on the chorus.

  16. JPX, I think the title "Underneath the Stars" somehow reminds me of "This Twilight Garden." And the fact that it replaced Plainsong/Open as the opener is saying something!

About The Only One, I didn't like it that much at first, but the studio version did it for me. I just can't listen to it without having the silliest smile on my face!

I'm also a fan of Cure-pop, but I also love Cure-rock. I'm the kind of fan who actually enjoys Wild Mood Swing (except for a couple of tracks). And I think Freakshow is going to be a nice single; don't quite understand why some people hate it.

  17. For me the last great single was JUST SAY YES !!!! and this didnt see its release (except for promos)....shame on this stupid recordcompanies. I am very sure it would have been a big hit.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh yeah wouldn't it be awesome if Underneath the Stars was the spiritual sequel to Twilight Garden?

We might as well start calling the new album Wish pt 2. Not exactly a bad thing IMO.

  19. Cant anyone post the 2 songs on youtube or whatever, for Goth's sake !

Been searching all day to provide a link to King Craig, but can't find it....

  20. My phone sucks at taking videos/photos, but I will try to get a recording of the new stuff if I can tonight (and if we get lucky enough to hear the new stuff). :) If I don't get anything, surely someone will!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Have FUN, V! Too bad Robert's voice is not in tip-top shape, but you can help him "wail away."

And yes, if you DON'T record the new songs - all I can say is, watch yer back!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Clockwise: Yes, ma'am. I'll do my best. I promise. Please don't scratch me! Or claw my eyes out! Nice kitty? :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. V: I will be purringly pleased if you record the new songs but hissingly horrific if you do not!

Oh please play the same new songs you played in KC, Roberto!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hey V, even if your phone doesn't do well for you tonigh could you give us a very detailed description of both new songs so we can imagine it in our minds and dream about listening to it

    ReplyDelete
  25. Right, so I was there.

"Underneath the Stars" to me felt like it had a lot in common with "Last Day of Summer," at least in pacing and feel. The song itself is vastly superior. It was an odd opener, but I liked it tremendously. It's definitely one that will old its own in the Cure canon.

As for the other one, it was VERY metal. The sort of song many of us were worried about when it was announced R.R. was producing Cure. I couldn't make out a lyric. Not one. RS's voice was pretty shredded by that point. But I have a feeling that the success of this track will depend greatly on the lyrics and the production. It was a different sound for the Cure, though one I could absolutely see working for them if the production doesn't sound as flat as it did on the s/t album.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Corrosive: Yes - I will take detailed mental notes about the songs, even if my phone doesn't record well, and I will try to catch some lyrics too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. i hope the they play a free form jazz odyssey and robert does some spoken word tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  28. "metal"? wtf. so we are talking like, iron maiden here. eeeeeeeee...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I do not get the comparison of The Only One and High, other than both being pure care-free pop. Actually, The Only One is closer to A Letter Elise, since both songs use the A E F# D chord progression. While High follows C# B A B progression.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Michael, thanks for the description. It sounds encouraging, as my favorite track from BF is The Last Day of Summer. Now I know I'll love it!

Fingers and toes crossed for tonight's (tomorrow morning for me) show. Really hope Robert's voice is recovering.

Right, I'm really going to bed.

  31. I hope by Metal it means it sounds more like the latter tracks on Wish such as Cut or End. i.e textured and deep.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i hope by metal it's like slayer, circa 'south of heaven'

    ReplyDelete
  33. Its a Cure version of metal. Metal meaning Cure does a Nine-Inch-Nails-circa-tds-style-of-metal. Simon was going nuts on this track. I would be willing to wager its his favorite of the new tracks.

  34. Hi everyone. This is part of what I posted in my review for COF:

The new song that people are calling, “Underneath the Stars” - When the band took the stage I thought immediately that it would be a different song than they have been opening with so far. There were no chimes or other sounds. It was very subdued. Jason was the first to get on stage and he triggered something that caused a rushing of waves to come out of the PA system. As the waves broke and lulled and excited the crowd at the same time, the rest of the band slowly came on stage.

Once they were all on and strapped in they gathered around the drum kit. At that point, Jason triggered something else that started the song and he clicked off as well. There were some timing issues, as it sounded like the 4 of them were playing at different tempos. What I personally think happened is that the triggered effect was at one tempo, Jason was at another, and Robert, Simon, and Porl split the difference. One of them went with the effect in hopes that everyone would go that way, and the others went with Jason. It sounded a bit bumbled for about 10 seconds or so and then it worked itself out.

What came out of the PA system was a beautiful song that I wish I had the vocabulary to properly describe. The song lasted about 7 minutes and all that I can say is that it is going to easily become a fan favorite for years to come. It sounds light, bright, and sparkly but it has the same sadness that we’ve all grown accustomed to. It has a very long intro with Simon holding things down as usual, and after about a minute, Robert and Porl come in and there is a lengthy part from Robert that it not quite a solo, but a beautiful bit of groundwork for the lyrics and the remainder of the song. I won’t go on about it much more, but it was beautiful and I hope to hear it again soon. Every minute that passes by, I forget just a little bit more it. For those of you still waiting, it’s worth the wait.

  35. thanks ghost- now i'm completely desperate to hear this song! great description!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wow, great description, Ghost! It definitely sounds like an album opener. I always love the first song on a new Cure album.

    ReplyDelete
  37. MB - You're very welcome. I hope we're all able to hear it again soon.

    ReplyDelete
  38. jpx - me too. They're always great

  39. can one of you at the shows compare either of the new stuff to previous cure songs? i'm just so curious!

  40. Gosh, after reading that description of UTS, Friday seems so freaking far away.

Never has "Friday I'm in Love" had so much meaning!

    ReplyDelete
  41. yeah i was just realizing today the significance of having our salt lake concert on friday. When i worked with my dad years ago i would make him listen to friday i'm in love every friday on the way to work.

    ReplyDelete
  42. ghost, that's all well and good, but what was the closing track of the main set like? :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks QMG! Your description sounds a bit like "Out of this world" as well.

(You have to imagine the waves then...)

    ReplyDelete
  44. just remind me of when wrong number debuted in american radio stations, firsts listeners gave reports like BEST CURE SONG EVER!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Sofia - et al. I kept telling myself that it (the first song)reminded me of Zwan's "Jesus, I/Mary Star of the Sea" from about 5:30-8:22. It has a similar feel and build to it. Call me crazy.

Also, if was oddly Mogwai-ish (that's a good thing!). Think Burn Girl Prom Queen/Christmas Steps (just the first part of it)...stuff like that.

As far as what Cure era it could be compared to, I think this song is in keeping with the Disintegration/Wish Era. It could have easily been on either of them, but more so Wish.

As far as the last song goes, it reminded of the same feel as Primary and Cut. It was a heavy driving song but it didn't seem to have the wah and flanger sounds in it. It's possible that that's because it was live.

Please remember that this is only my opinion and it has been 2 days since I've heard them so my memory is fading, but people are asking and it's the best I can do. Hopefully some more questions can be answered and blanks filled in tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  46. ytalo- I can understand your comment. I've been around long enough, and seen and heard enough Cure songs and shows to say if it was garbage or not. I truly did like the first song a lot. You'll notice I haven't hyped up the last song quite as much. There is a reason for that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Cure-metal and ethereal Cure? Sounds like my dream songs! My nipples are getting hard at the thought.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Warm shower time, clockwise? (A cold shower would just make them harder)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm of the opinion that the second song doesn't really have much you can compare it to in the catalog. Its more appropriate to say it does have some things in common with Mogwai, as the riff rolls for quite a while before getting to the vocal (quite like The Kiss in that respect), but the rhythm of the track is way less-nuanced than Mogwai would do. More four on the floor, as it were.
