WCYY video interview with Robert

WCYY interviews Robert in Boston. Final album tracklisting STILL not decided upon, but probably a 13 track, upbeat though not necessarily happy album. Maybe two downbeat songs. But the big epic, downbeat tracks will be saved for a possible very unhappy Christmas album.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

  1. here we go again?
    Christmas, Halloween, His Birthday...!!!

    anyway,
    hope this is true!

    13 part 1 / 13 part 2 ?
    a là System Of A Down (Mesmerize/Hypnotize) ?
first side upbeat and second downbeat and epic?
    let's hope so.

  2. I'm not going to even read the article. I'm seriously done reading anything Robert has to say. For now on, lyrics only. I mean it. Oh, and Craig. Yep. Lyrics and Craig only. Whose with me?

PS: Sleep When I'm Dead is f-ing awesome!!

  3. i dont see the reason why i cant make just a single record with the best tracks. It doesnt make any sense a christmas record..
cos we know that it will never happen. It just another lie..
and waste of time and creativity.
I dont think they are able to make 26 fantastic songs.
From what i heard..at the moment this record is full of nice songs and nothing more.
i still waiting for a single masterpiece a la lost.

  4. well he didn't say xmas this year, did he?

  5. That would be cool to have two albums in one year. Maybe the second one would be download only or somethin'.

    In any event interesting interview.

  6. Kent - you can't read this interview. It's video. : )

  7. Maybe he can read lips...? ;)

  8. sigh beat it with the negativity, I was just thinking yeah right as if he would get two albums out, but why not, I am going to remain hopeful....naive, but hopeful

and stop it with the 'lying' comments, its not lying to have plans change...geez

  9. screw what he SAID in the interview - it's all about robert's HAIR!

he has a ponytail in this interview. Cute!

  10. @clockwise: I thought Robert looked really cute in this interview. :) I think he looks much better right now than he did in Europe in Feb, but I saw him the day before and the day that he went to the "dentist" (and was therefore mysteriously absent from the Berlin interview Craig posted here) - so maybe that was why. :)

  11. Is there anybody on the face of the earth that actually believes there will be a Christmas album?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I thought that the "Christmas album" part was a joke. :) But I, for one, think it sounds like a fantastic idea and would love to see Robert dressed up like Santa Claus on the supporting tour...

  13. Robert just talks out of his anus. That's fine, it's part of his quirky charm and all. Only fanatical creeps would construe what he says as "lies." He is only beholden to HIMSELF when he decides to do something, or decides to change it.

Waiting to get flamed for that comment. BRING IT ON FREAKS!

  14. wait v...what are you implying about this dentist trip :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. @earmuff: Hehe, not really implying anything, other than he seemed a bit out of sorts when I saw him in Europe, so if there really was a "dentist trip", I would believe it - he kept holding his mouth at the Berlin show, so I figured something was wrong with that area of his anatomy. :) And I assumed that was why he may have looked/seem tired at those shows I saw, compared to how he looks now? Does any of this make any sense?

  16. i loved his answers to the third part of that interview...so true.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think Robert believes his answers and comments when he is giving them in the moment...

But... i have been a Cure fan for 22 years. This is just par for the course, I can't tell you how many times he said The Cure was breaking up...

He even said in one interview 'I can't imagine being 50 and deciding what the next Cure single will be'..

Guess what RS? That day is here, lol !!!

RS just blabs away about release dates, singles, tracks, yada yada yada, I learned a long time ago as a Cure fan until I'm holding in my hands or seeing it on stage - I don't believe it, lol.

  18. i also remember one interview where robert had mentioned a certain time in his career where he WOULD just go around and make a point out of lying to the press. but that was years ago...

    though he is adoreable

  19. "yes, virginia, there is a cure album. it exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no christmas cure album. It would be as dreary as if there were no virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished..."

    i don't think it's gonna happen :|

  20. Where the hell's the rest of the interview?! :(

    ReplyDelete
  21. After watching the Christmas album comment by Robert; you can tell by his laugh that he was being sarcastic.

    ReplyDelete
  22. At last good news in this interview !

    ReplyDelete
  23. robert is always sarcastic, and lying when opening his mouth in a interview.
christmas album will be out september 2010 !

and when are the cure touring europe for the new album?

making 2 single album is a really good thing, because he made his contract with 3 albums.

  24. I'm not seeing it as negative as many here. First off, the songs are already recorded. The endless delays of the last bunch of records always happened because the songs just weren't ready, usually because Robert didn't quickly enough come up with lyrics he was happy with.

It wouldn't make sense to record 30-something songs and just release the half of them.

The argument that some of the songs from the last sessions hadn't been released neither isn't really working for me, as Robert stated recently that he wasn't really happy with the version of "A Boy I Never Knew" that the previous lineup recorded. IIRC, "Please Come Home" was also mentioned as one of the unused tracks from the 2004 sessions that have been re-recorded as a 4-piece.

So if Robert feels that the new material is good (which from what i've heard yet seems to be very much the case), i'm quite confident that eventually he'll release it. If it makes more sense to do 2 albums because he thinks the track layout works better like that - so be it.

And i also don't think that "christmas" is the theme of that (potential) 2nd album, i'm quite sure we won't see Rudi Reindeer or Santa on the cover. I understood it more that it might be released round that time of the year. - My only concern is that it might be a "download only" thing, which i'd be truly unhappy about.

  25. Yeah download only would suck

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't mind a download-only album in ADDITION to the CD that will come out in Sept, but download-only from here on out would suck big hairy testes.* I think that's a cop-out move on every band's part if it comes to that. Personally, I buy several CDs a month and LOVE haunting my fave record store in search of the latest coolest thing.

*Craig, does it bother you that I am so profane? If so, I can censor myself.

  27. Let's see. Record company whores would lose money with a 2-disc double album. Numbers run as follows:

    33 recorded songs
    -13 tracks on new album
    -4 b-sides
    = 16 remaining tracks

-13 or so for next album
-3-4 for b-sides to singles for next album
=all songs accounted for and The Cure released from their record contract, band splits up.

Geffen probably wouldn't put out two Cure albums so close to each other to have one come out this Christmas also...can't saturate the market too much without losing sales. Look for final Cure studio album in December 2009.

    ReplyDelete
  28. oh, and that would be optimal in the long run by...

    a) making both new studio albums more consistent in sound, instead of the awkward combination of pop and dark songs on albums like Wish and KMKMKM. The band's strongest albums (notwithstanding classic songs scattered around other albums) have always been the ones with the most consistent moods (Faith, Pornography, Disintegration).

    b) giving the band the impetus for new material to accompany a farewell tour, paving the way for Robert's solo album (which doesn't actually exist).

    ReplyDelete
  29. FAREWELL tour / Band Splits??? You must not have seen them play yet this tour... :)

(By the way, haven't they already had three farewell tours? Wasn't that the Prayer tour? And the Wish tour? And the Dream tour? ;) )

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sure, they always say they'll split, but keep going because, as musicians, most of them don't really have anything else to fall back on, and they don't want to retire yet, even if the band's musical output has pretty dropped in overall quality since 1989 (though I have a soft spot for Bloodflowers, mainly because it's a more "difficult" Cure album than most). I'll be pleased if the new album is a decent improvement over the last one, which was a pointlessly self-indulgent and derivative exercise in self-parody with all the sonic production values of an abortion. (Why many "fans" claimed it was their best album since Disintegration boggles the mind, but surely the more rabid part of the band's fanbase should take some of the blame for gladly lapping up anything Robert says.)

On the other hand, the band obviously can't go on forever, much as the more mindless Cure hordes would wish. a farewell tour now wouldn't be called as such, but I seriously doubt this will be the final tour. If the band stopped recording new music and just kept touring, that would please me and most fans just fine (after all, people typically want to hear "the classics" at their shows anyway).

and yes, I saw them last year and will see them later this month. Will be another routine Cure show, I'm sure. I'm not expecting to be blown away.

  31. Clockwise - Not a problem with me.

  32. david- you must be a lot of fun at parties...

  33. Very disappointing, very very very.

He's never going to release the "christmas album" songs.
