  2. oh, you were kidding!

    ...

    (right?)

  3. Well that seals the deal. No need for me to purchase this. Could they have possibly picked a bigger group of tossers for these remixes?

    ReplyDelete
  4. oh yippy! emo remixes!!! so excited now im going to go cut myself!!!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I've already posted my April Fools joke for the year. This is legit.

    ReplyDelete
  6. is robert trying to cross over to the emo genre? (and no i dont think the cure were before) still trying to get that youth market eh?

    ReplyDelete
  7. well...robert can do what he wants, it's his band. but i like the remixes where people who have displayed some modicum of actual musical talent and versatility mess around with cure songs, a la the mixed up album, or the remixes from wish.

who knows? maybe these remixes will find heretofore unheard dimensions in these singles. but i'm betting, since i don't give a rat's ass about any of the bands or individuals and don't think they're talented, that i probably won't give a shit about these remixes.

  8. This was the best the cure could get to remix their ep?

    Perhaps someone like
    * Richard D. James of "Aphex Twin"
    * Justin Broadrick of "jesu"
    * "Fennesz"
    * "Tim Hecker"
    *"eluvium"
would have been much more interesting choices.

Who would you guys have picked?

    ReplyDelete
  9. im waiting for the "just kidding..."

    please?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Doesn´t look very promising.

For me the sum would be like that:

CURE + EMO = Poor Quality Mixes

Why CURE are doing such things like that ?

    :(

  11. This is the list from Universal. It's confirmed by them. Given the track record of this source, I have to believe him/her.

But as long as none of these bands sing or play on the remixes, I'm fine with it. I'll probably only listen to it once anyway, then file it away. : )

    ReplyDelete
  12. I can live with Fall out boy and My Chemical Romance but AFI and 30 Seconds To Mars? What the fuck? Well, they already played with Korn for MTV Unplugged so maybe try to attach a new audience... I will give it a try... just be a little more open minded Cure Fans. Remember what Robert's trying to say with Us or Them. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  13. You've got to be kidding. This can't be right. It couldn't be worse. I'm not having it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. i hate. 30 seconds to mars.. so. much. *voice shaking* i hate. jared leto. more than any of the bands above.

someone. for the love of artistic integrity. help robert.

the other versions of the EP better be a dream. because FUCK!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think I'm the only one who is excited about the choice of remixers :S I don't understand why everyone's so upset I think it's cool, as cool as remixes go that is, their novelties. I don't really like remixes generally I prefer the originals but at least these will fill a gap until the new album.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I never thought The Cure could go lower than the Saffron debackle. This isn't the first time they've jumped the shark.

Dammit this has to be the worst news from The Cure in a long time.

Pete Wentz???? Are you fucking kidding me??????

    This is just depressing.

I would rather there be no EP at all than this crap fest.

I will donate $1.99 and a pint of blood to the IRC, but I will not support this EP.

    Boycott!

  17. Eww Eww Ewwwwwwww

  18. Robert has become the equivalent of those old, pedophillic-looking guys who hang out at clubs, ridiculously dressed in trendy fashions that only younger generations should wear, trying to take home people far, far younger than him.

On the other hand, for Cure fans to gnash and moan and cry about who does the remixes on an EP that few people will even bother buying anyway is, without a trace of irony, a total EMO move.

    ReplyDelete
  19. where's hynreck? i think it's time for some monocle and tea!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Rev, since when is expecting better from your favorite artists "EMO"?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sometimes I'm pretty shocked about how little open minded some Cure Fans are and about how less they seem to have understood of what they're trying to say with their music. :(

  23. Well, as a long-time must purchase every available item by the Cure kind of guy.....I've finally found an item that I have ZERO interest in.

I wouldn't buy this for a buck in the used bin.

I wouldn't piss on it if it was on fire.

When looking at my Cure CD's on the shelf, I'm just gonna pretend this never existed.

(and for those who say...wait until I actually hear the results before I condemn, I say...YOU GO AHEAD AND LISTEN FOR ME, I"VE GOT BETTER THINGS TO DO.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. C'mon guys. I don't want to sound like the Cure cheerleader again, but you haven't even heard them yet....and it's still The Cure's music and lyrics, just remixed.

I am still very curious and anxious to hear this EP, and you can bet your ass I'll be purchasing a copy.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jared Leto, AFI, MCR and that shit band FOB.......the EP will be a Snoozefest! How about letting someone like BT whose a musical genius do the job. Besides his original work and numerous soundtracks projects, his remixes of other artists music are AWESOME!!!

OK I'll give it a listen but I'm almost 100% sure I won't like it but I could be wrong? The EP could be a remix masterpiece. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, I guess I'll just contribute directly to the International Red Cross, then. That way I can get a tax deduction.

    ReplyDelete
  27. What a Shame!!! I was expecting people like Trent Reznor, Kevin Shields, Alan Wilder, Bowie, Interpol, Mogwai... I Think i´m just dream on... Emo Sucks... sorry ... I´ll buy it just for collection... JARED LETO??? WTF!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. >:@ I'M GOING TO HAVE AN ANEURYSM!

    yes! MONOCLE AND TEA! STAT!

    ReplyDelete
  29. cpg--You have a good point! We really don't know what the remixes will sound like. They could be decent, I've been wrong about things like this before. The remixes will contain plenty of Cure elements within each recording.

I'll most likely buy the EP because I have to have all things Cure but I don't know if I'll ever really listen to it. I'm just not all to happy with the people whose remixes might be on the EP but I'll wait to see before I pass anymore judgment on it.

  31. Contributing directly to the International Red Cross instead of buying this turd sounds like a splendid idea.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Contribute and give blood. Thanks Robert for raising awareness if nothing else! But I'm not buying this shitty CD and letting you think I support it!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Fine.. I'll obliged.
    o_p

oops I've put it on backward, silly me!
    o_q
    There you go!

    *Sips tea*

For the record, I don't really care who does the remix, I'm not such a big fan of remix plus... to tell the truth...

    I don't know those guys!!
I feel so out of the loop... I'm old.
Any case, I'll give it a try and try to keep an open mind.

    *Resume sipping tea*

  34. whos BT? initials and acronyms confuse me kitty..

ok.. hes got the audacity to say the smiths and U2 sucked.. and then he works with this lot. robert can do better. Porl, Simon and Jason need to put some fucking input.this Ep isnt directed towards us , and hes got an extra special one to make up for this :)

ill try to calm down before i rip up all my paper before school even starts

    ReplyDelete
  35. how dare robert talk shit about morrissey and duran duran when these bands are a zillion times worse than those two.

they are insignificant, talentless, hacks who will be forgotten in another 3 years. we will never hear from these fly-by-night bands again and robert is placing them on some sort of platform of awesomeness?
get fucking real. get real. i dont care if theyre are only remixes. its the principle of the thing. robert has gone on and on for years about maintaining this higher level of artistic character and sincerity...

i always thought they were better than this. or pretended to be...

and before anyone tells me what to think- i don't care. hipster irony is the farthest thing from what the cure has been for me and i'm bored by this entire idea.

  36. deej, BT is brian transeau, a dj & musician who goes by the name BT.

  37. thank you, hynreck *zens out*

i see we are on the exact same page, scribbles. sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just had a strange thought....

I wonder if American radio will now grasp onto the songs now that these announced bands are remixing?

It was just a thought. It actually made me a bit sad to think it could happen........what if the re-mixed singles went mainstream and left the originals sadly un-heard by the general public?

Someone smack me upside the head if my thought was way out of line. Here I go reading too much into something that hasn't even happened.

    ReplyDelete
  39. how much more compressed and shallow can they make these songs? just give your $ directly to the red cross.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey DJ---BT is the stage name for Brian Wayne Transeau whose a music producer, composer, singer, re-mixer, part-time dj and songwriter extraordinaire.

From Wikipedia.....He is a pioneering artist in the trance genre and is a multi-instrumentalist. He has produced several film scores and music for various musical artists. His signature technique the Stutter edit. Basically he's a techno artist guy, so if you like that sort of music, you'll love him.

Holy good night Mary Ellen Ryan and all the Saints in Ireland!!

They are delaying the album another month for this crap?

    ReplyDelete
  42. everybody hete this but.....
remember this is not a cover for the cure.....
this album is made for the cure....
robert singing and playing the guitar...
    simon playing the bass.....
    porl playing the guitar....
    jason playing drums.....

    so what is the problem....
this people who everybody hate only did remixes...that is......
they don't playing nothing is this album....
they don't singing nothing in this album......

so is the cure remix by this emo people...that is....
    don't worried be happy.....

    ReplyDelete
  43. DA: They are not delaying the album for this. The album wouldn't have been ready anyway. Still would have been delayed until October.....or later.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Exactly Ram! I don't know if you're male or female, so I'll just kiss you on the cheek.

    It's still The Cure.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This is VERY weird. It does sounds like a joke.

I will listen to it before saying anything, but, well...

    ReplyDelete
  46. wouah, some people have strong reactions!

the fact that we all had weeks to dream and imagine who of many talented musicians would remix what makes it worst i think. High expectations, big deception.

    ReplyDelete
  48. and kinda like CG was saying - these bands will probably get more attention for remixing a cure song, than "look! the cure wrote a new song!"

and i dont want a bunch of teeny boppers going around saying they like the cure when they only heard one friggin song. i like it when people at school ask me who the cure is when the see the tour shirt, doesnt it make you feel good when you know a great band someone doesnt? i love the mystery and attention it gets. everyone at school knows MCR, FOB, pffft.

i suppose this is all coming from robert wanting the cure to stay relevant.. especially with a younger crowd. but in truth, his peers and critics will have more cause to mock the band.

    ReplyDelete
  49. frankly i would picked some electronic new comers and great stars of the electronic scene
like: apparat / aphex twin / trent reznor / stendeck (love it...www.myspace.com/stendeck )/ midnight juggernauts / cut copy ...so many that are 100000 time better than afi & co!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm absolutely knocked to my knees. That's almost the exact nightmare list. I'm floored.

And there is something very, very wrong with me. Because I'm still going to buy it.

Five bucks says at least one of these remixes includes new vox from the remixers.

    Any takers?

    ReplyDelete
  51. "Well, heard the whole thing today. I love it. It sounds just like it did live (minus the chorus on certain parts, which I'm sure some will complain about). Without You is... well, it's NOT Christmas Without You. Another "up" song. I will not compare it to anything because that annoys me when others do it, then I hear it, and it is not at all what they compared it to. It begins abrubtly with Robert and an acoustic- very nice. I put it at #2 on my b-sides list. Pretty much makes SWID the "darkest" song on the album.

    Without You 4:11"

  52. the joke is not funny anymore, is a joke rigth?.

    I'm just in shock!

    ReplyDelete
  53. MY GOD (and yes I am shouting in txt on purpose) you are so ludicrously judgemental and frankly disturbingly elistist in your opinions, Kevin Shields etc, why not just get Wire to do a remix for the ultimate in cool cred. Jesus, wait till you hear the e.p before judging it.

I think there is a cool symmetry to Robert getting artists that sight the Cure as an influence to make music, regardless of the fact you may not like their own output. As noted by someone with their brain engaged today, it is still Cure music.

Plus it is also about giving generously to a good cause.

    sigh

and a note to DJ - c'mon man - who cares how someone gets into a band, if it be a remix or not, exposure to new music doesnt need to be via the most depressing track on Faith or something.

    ReplyDelete
  54. "and i dont want a bunch of teeny boppers going around saying they like the cure when they only heard one friggin song."

Everyone's got to start somewhere. If they like the one song they hear, chances are they'll go and give the rest of the Cure catalogue a listen to. That's how new Cure fans get started. I'm assuming you heard a song, liked it, and actively sought more songs. Or did you go out and buy every album before listening to any songs?

    ReplyDelete
  55. maybe you will have to be in a hypnagogic state to enjoy the remixes....lol

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh wow. I guess this is supposed to be some sort of promotional tour to expose the band to a younger crowd?

The thinking here must be, if they offer this up a month before the album, that it will pique the curiosity of the remixers' completest fans?

Not a terrible idea. I suppose this is part of what Roger was talking about when he said he disagreed that things were being done for the commercial sake of the band.

I hope that it works, and it sells a couple more albums for them. But I have the strange feeling that it just might backfire and cause a lot of the longtime fans to view this as a sell out. To put such a sour taste in their mouth just prior to release is surely a mis-step. Those long time fans are the ones who still actually *BUY* music, rather than downloading it. Demographics are key in this day and age.

At the minimum, this will at least open the door for a post-release tour to recoup on lost sales of the album. Clouds and silver linings, people!

    ReplyDelete
  57. i must say, jade puget writes some pretty good ebm music as well. i think his remix will be good.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Alastair, you said pretty much what I was thinking, save for saying that I find it rather ironic that almost everyone here is slamming the remixes as well as the artists doing the remixes before you've heard anything, and are worried that The Cure are catering more to the general pop crowd with their remixer choices, yet whine about the band not being able to get their new songs heard on the radio, and about the poor promotion in general. NEWSFLASH: As shocking and unfortunate as this may be, the whims of the pop crowd exert a significant influence, so any help that the band can get from them in increasing airplay is not a bad thing.

Now, regarding what S said, they've been called sellouts more than once, starting pretty much in late 1982 and into 1983, with the release of the pop singles that were included on the The Walk EP and the Japanese Whispers album, after having releasing the two most depressing albums in their back catalog. Guess what? They GAINED MORE FANS and INCREASED SALES, and became MASSIVELY POPULAR in Europe, and a dedicated, though somewhat smaller fanbase in the US and Canada.

In conclusion, WOULD ALL OF THE WHINERS HERE PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE SHUT UP, CUT OUT THE ELITIST CRAP, AND GIVE THIS A CHANCE? Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  59. By the way, pardon the grammatical errors. Unfortunately, LJ users don't have the option of deleting their posts here. Otherwise, I'd do that, and post a corrected version.

  60. I think Jade's contribution could be really good, I think Blaqk Audio is great, a nice 80's feel to it and I know he and davy and huge fan's of the Cure.

I heart FOB? ha ha....I love Patrick he is so squishy and cute...lol

and I may think Jared Leto seems a bit full of himself, but then i don't know him, so how can i judge, at the very least they write a catchy pop song....since when was pop music so bad anyway.

all i want is people to not be judgemental of the collection until they hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. alright, ill stop being less negative. its just that i dont like these bands being associated with the cure! whatever.....

to make up, shawn and alastair - ill give you the EP framed, and signed by all the bands! :)

funny enough, jade puget and I were on the same road a few days ago. i shouldve asked about the EP :P. and i agree with you alastair, he is good at mixing. ill probably just buy the EP just because hes working on it

    ReplyDelete
  62. j'ai hate d 'avoir perfect boy sais qu'en qui va sortir sur iTunes ??

    ReplyDelete
  63. Here's an idea..if you don't want to buy, then don't buy it.

To say you hate it before you hear it is silly.

Ever thought you might like it? Eee Gads, the horror.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Correct me if i am wrong, but these remixes are from the Cure recording tracks, right? They won't be covers of the songs, right?

If so, I will wait and see what they sound like.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'll say this Jared Leto is annoyingly attractive and has perfect hair, for that I do want to slap him silly, out of jealousy of course. His lyrics are a tad pompous also. But I am happy to see what he does to the track

hey dj, i understand we all have sharp reactions to news sometimes, but lets wait and see what we get eh!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jesus Christ... There are so many troubled ELITISTS commenting on this development. Personally, I'm not at all upset about those chosen to remix these songs. In fact, I'm really excited. Has everybody forgotten what a wonderful job AFI did when they covered Just Like Heaven for the MTV ICON special? Jade Puget is a very talented sound texture designer as exhibited in Blaqk Audio. I look forward to his contribution the most.

Now, I'm not a fan of Fall Out Boy, MCR, or 30 Seconds to Mars but I'm certainly willing to see what twists these individuals put on The Cure's songs.

Also, in regard to the "emo" label attached to these bands... Doesn't anyone feel ridiculous even using it? What is "emo"? Since when were people not allowed to emote musically? Oh, I forgot. We should detach ourselves from that which makes us human then see what kind of music is produced. Sounds good...

People seem to be forgetting that these are REMIXES. You'll always have the original recordings come October... Seriously, calm the fuck down. Be grateful that you're getting more Cure with a new twist. Who knows? You may even like it...

    ReplyDelete
  67. *wonders whether all the mixers are signed to the Mighty U*

*wonders if the Mighty U see this as a great way to get The Cure's music heard by the mass* - perhaps there will be more radio plays - especially after he Mighty U's publicity train has failed dismally so far.

*wonders if Robert has made the Mighty U donate all profits to charity to make up for the pain of having to go through this process with these artists*

Just some random thoughts early in the morning

    ReplyDelete
  68. Jade Puget is part of Blaqk Audio? Well, if that's the case, then his mix is probably going to be excellent, as Blaqk Audio's stuff is really, really good.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I was going to make refrence to how "us or them" completly flew over someone's head and then said someone tells us all how we all missed what the cure's music is all about... but that would be off tangent... so screw it... I'll just say that this sucks... sucks big monkey balls... they postponed the album again and this is what they give us? another postponement and we all get a rectal exam instead... yay...
I never pot but all this was just too much...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Jade Puget from AFI is an immensely talented musician. And what's this about people complaining "The Cure has crossed over to the emo genre .... fuck...come on....the birthrights to the emo genre belong to The Cure. I'm not saying The Cure is emo by any means, but imagine what die hard fans thought when The Cure released Mixed Up and Wish, a dance album and Friday I'm in Love, WTF?? Just go with the fuckin flow people and respect Robert's musical direction. Fuck!

    ReplyDelete
  71. "Oh Woe is me"

Yeah this sucks. I still wouldn't mind hearing the samples in a few weeks so I won't know if I'm going to buy it till then. It's not looking promising though is it?

  74. My first reaction to this was "shit, what has robert done?"

However, thinking about it its not too bad. They are only remixes which means the core of the songs are still present, the remixers can't do the songs in the own style because it is still the cure.. I don't like the thought of these band mixing with the curee but all Robert is doing is what he's always done, build up a fuss and mix commercialism with the cure.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Oh goodness. This is twice in the same day I've been called an elitist.

The first time was arguing about Obama over McCain.

    ReplyDelete
  76. the EP is going to be forgotten in a few months.. so *shrugs*.

everyone is still entitled to critique! (bitch, rant, whine). reading the band i despise the most, mix all time favorite band doesnt make me want to get up and dance. its just too commericial. but im not worried about jade mixing, im excited. and im glad hes doing freakshow!
but 30secs mixing the only one.. *makes strangling gestures*

for peeps who dont know them- to get familiar with these bands:

  78. Elitist my ass. Using this bunch of wet-behind-the-ears fetuses exclusively, rather than including at least ONE artist who has grown at least a few dozen pubic hairs is what bothers me.

It feels like a scheme to entice the children into the fold rather than a legitimate attempt at putting a new and interesting twist on the songs. It fucking reeks imo.

Why can't it just be about making great music? Time passes, people age, bands, even the seemingly immortal ones, reach crests of popularity that are almost impossible to recreate. It's time to face these facts and move on. And making a mockery of your art for the sake of capturing a new audience isn't likely to make much of a difference. Why not fork over the ca$h necessary to hire a management firm that will put them back on the map, at least for a while? I'd much rather see them purchase kid fans -- at least that way, the art wouldn't be potentially tainted!

Goddammit, why can't he just age gracefully like Springsteen has?

Flame away. I don't fucking care. For that matter, as long as I can dl Underneath the Stars, I don't much care if I ever get the new record.

    Shit...

(Good to see you back, Cat. Let's hope that we won't have reasons to once again bail.)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oh and check it out.. there are cure basslines in mcr and fom, cure guitar in afi and cure drums in 3 0 secs. hmmmm no coinsidence, its a clever card by Robert but not one i like.

    ReplyDelete
  80. ils y a toujours qui sont jamais content crist que vous faite pitié !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. 7bluestars...

    "Wet-behind-the-ears"?

Let's tally the years these bands have been active:

    AFI - 17 years
30 Seconds to Mars- 10 years
Fall Out Boy - 7 years
My Chemical Romance - 7 years

So uh, what designates "wet-behind-the-ears", in your opinion? Just wondering. Whether we like the way these bands sound or not, each have been are talented in their own right.

It is silly to me that anyone can be bold enough to claim to understand and/or question the motives behind The Cure's actions. Go with the flow. We'll all be happy when Underneath the Stars is within arm's reach.

Perhaps I'm being too fair about this. I'm just not as heated as some others seem to be about all this. Can't wait for the EP and The Perfect Boy! :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. I am of two minds about the whole thing. On the one hand, I am horrified at the mere UTTERANCE of such talentless hacks in the same BREATH as The Almighty Cure.

On the other hand, I haven't heard the remixes. They may be shit, in which case I will merely groan about awesome singles being ruined by talentless hacks, and then despondently file them away.

Conversely, they may be brilliant, in which case I will jubilantly express my utter surprise. After all, I do not like Blink 182, but RSX's collab with them was wonderful, IMO.

I have my doubts, but I am willing to let them be dispelled.

And really, I do think the hoopla about this is rather overblown... even if I myself was a bit dismayed upon first reading about it. It's just a freakin' EP of singles we already have - this was not even in the big picture a few months ago, and we are certainly free to pass on this if we choose.

Besides, we will always have the original versions, and those, to my ears, are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  83. PS And yes, this IS a ploy by RSX and the Mighty U to lure in the emo kiddies. I am ambivalent about that as well. But whatever. I am very happy so far with what I have heard from The Cure themselves, ad so if the album lives up to my expectations, that is ALL that matters.

  84. Dont like those bands, but it makes perfect sense to me since all the royalties are going to charity. The cure has already please a lot of us fans with the tour and singles.

  85. Think about this...

Yesterdays Goth is todays Emo - both redundant tags to belittle people for the choices say make...both pathetic and cruel.

Everyone against this sounds like crochety old parents!

" I hate this sort of music " (hurumph, grumble etc) waddles off on cane.

Listen without predjudice before you judge!

  86. I tend to agree alastair.. but I do see where others, such as DJ and 7Bluestars, are coming from as well. These bands are pretty pathetic, and it would suck for them to ruin perfectly good singles. On the other hand, we have not heard the mixes, and they may be brilliant - as was that Blink song with RSX.

Either way, none of this will matter at ALL once we have that coveted album in our hands.

I say we go with your and Shawn's calm-headedness and SEE what happens.

  88. AFI is NOT emo guys. So shut up!

  89. The EMO craze is terrible. It's just a commercial fad designed to cash in on teenage insecurity which in turn glorifies self harm and depression. A true sterotype albiet of a minority.

Funny how Robert always distances himself from Goth but jumps on the EMO craze. Dollar (or Pound) signs in his eyes methinks.

I'm ready to see what happens with this though. It could sound great although remaining optimistic in the face of such shit is getting hard.

  90. i hate bananas, but they don't stop growing. get over it, gang. this is happening. buy it, or don't. support the cure regardless.

Seriously you guys, did you *expect* anything better?

------------> He's trying to get a new fan base. Still.

He did the same thing on the last album, and all those other times I constantly try to foget.

    ReplyDelete
  94. If Robert is trying attract young audience, calling people from Justice, !!!, Holy Fuck (or any other band wich is aware of what is happening in music nowadays) would be a wiser decision.
Anyway I hope this EP is not going to be as dumb as "The 13th" remixes :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. jesus ...is it april 1st today or something?

if this is a real piece of news, i'm embarrassed beyond... i can't even describe it.

this emo shit is SO SAD that any previous shit-crap collaboration with korn & co. looks like christmas now.

    *******!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Remember, Robert said they sent the songs out to numerous people to send back remixes. Maybe the other remixers just didn't send a remix back in time, or simply weren't as good as these four remixes.

You can't blame him for 'pandering to the emo crowd' if the simple fact is that four 'emo' bands' members did the best remixes.

[I think the term 'emo' is about as useful as 'goth' when describing musicians and their fans, but you get my point.]

    ReplyDelete
  97. yeah, perhaps other guys did even worse but even if jared leto did the best remix, that doesn't mean it's good. being "the best" of some lot still doesn't guarantee any quality. lets' remember that in the land of armless people a one-armed man is a king.

seriously, i never saw anything worth a piece of turd coming out from the 30 se to mars/my chemical romance/fall out boy squad. nothing. so i seriously can't believe this would be any better.

besides, even if we didn't talk about the artistic quality/style here, what we get with 100% certainty now is utterly horrible production and remastering that is sheer murder (hey look, just like the recent singles were! :)).
THAT's something that is always guaranteed with these bands.
    and that's awful.

back to whether these were the best remixes that came up:
we don't even know all to whom robert sent the tracks. perhaps he only sent them to these guys? or,
perhaps he sent them to a number of people but just chose totally wrong kind of people.
    that's what i believe, actually.
he doesn't seem to know anything about the subject here, if this is really his "best" choice.

  100. HEY GUYS,look
I am 16 years old and i am a giant CURE FAN i love ht ecure's music their style. The Cure is not just a band it's a way of life,it's religion,devotion...I have loved them for almost one year...i have cure dreams, when i'm online i'm either logged here or in an other cure site,i translate lyrics, draw artwork, inspired by THE CURE,everything...it's just an obsession, and I'm sure almost everyone here understands me,understands what Cure is-love,music for the sake of itsels and as Robert has stated in interviews 'total distaste for what other people in the musical business do'
and today... THE MOST AWFUL CURE NEWS EVER,most of my classmates love emo...yeah but they used to love rap,dance...and after years they'll start loving somethin else,EMO is shit,it is not THE CURE,it's a total shame and a big insult to all Cure fans(no matter what age) to make this...it's just unreal...i believe that Geffen are the ones responsible for this and that Robert does it to finance an upcomming tour, hopefully,or the next album(s)...and yes,The Cure are not that popular today, they're not played anywhere, but, this website and many more show that they have THE LOYALEST support of fans in the whole world, people that live with the Cure...and still i have friends that love the Cure although a few,and there is no other band in the world with 3 or even more generation of fans...and events like this are just a shame for all these years of cure devotion *and Robert, you've a;ready had n1 hits, most bands now haven't even done that and why THE HELL ARE U DOING THIS,it won't result in any good neither for Cure fans nor for The Cure's reputation of an alternative(and commercially-successful) institution in music*
whatsoever, let's hope that the new album will be worth this and the Cure will continue touring the world with their extraordinary musc....
with love to all REAL Cure fans,
Todor (a bulgarian life-long 16-year old Cure fan)

  101. Wow! I'm staggered at how narrow minded most of you seem to be! OK, I've never even heard of most of these remixers/bands - I guess I'm outside their demographic. But come on - CHILL! You lot might not enjoy it, but if it gives some EMO kiddies the chance to listen to the Cure then surely that's cool?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Ok, after biting my tongue on this, I have to say it:

Jared Leto will always be (nothing more than) Jordan Catalano to me.

    I can't help it! :)

  103. I have decided, for the sake of sanity, to not get immersed in anymore oppressive negativity. I actually agree with some of what the more negative posts are saying…but then I think, “Does any of this MATTER?” It’s a freakin’ EP of REMIXES of singles we ALREADY HAVE! And, IMO, the original versions of the singles and b-sides are good or excellent (TOO/FS/AKOS/DU being excellent, and NYT and SWID being merely good). This EP was not even in the big picture until recently, and when it was first announced, many of us were expressing our dismay over the very CONCEPT of the thing. NOW we are complaining about who is remixing something that we denigrated to begin with! Really, who cares who remixes it? We have the definitive versions, and we are free NOT to buy this EP! It has NO bearing whatsoever on the album itself.

I never liked Mixed Up, for example, with the exception of one or two songs. Indeed, I forget that MU even EXISTS, as I am never compelled to listen to it. AND yet MU has NO bearing on what the Cure did before or after that. This will be the same way. It’s just remixes of some songs we already have. Sure, MU had remixers with more “cred” but whatever! Perhaps Hynagogic States will surprise us all.

I like what Shawn said. The Cure have always done sell-out moves like this to attract a wider audience. I can’t imagine the dismay of some fans upon hearing Jap Whispers after the fabulously deliciously dark trilogy of 17/Faith/Porno. But the Cure always reverts back to making a variety of tune styles – some raw and dark, and some blatantly poppy. It’s their trademark.

Sure, I am not THRILLED about AFI and Fall Out Boy remixing – but clearly this EP was not made with people like me in mind. RSX has already given us diehards a FANTASTIC FUCKING TOUR with some great setlists, some GREAT singles and b-sides, and the promise of an exciting album – and STILL WE COMPLAIN! ABOUT REMIXES THAT WE HAVENT EVEN HEARD!

This is not to impugn what my good friends 7Bluestars and DJ and some others have said… but it is to say that I respectfully diverge from the more negative mindset. I like what alastair said, too – it’s all about symmetry. RSX releases some things with diehards in mind, and some things with luring in new fans in mind. He has ALWAYS done things this way! Could he have chosen more respectable musicians? YES! But then I remember that he loves Mogwai, a fantastic band, and my confidence is restored. He makes some questionable moves, but I think he is still a brilliant musician and all that matters is the new ALBUM, not some damn EP of REMIXES. :-)

Gawd. I’m rambling. Sorry. Feel free to scroll right past.

  106. What a coincidence! All of the aforementioned "remixers" happen to be on my all time "die in a plane crash" list for being talentless wastes. How did Smashmouth miss this remix list? Can you tell I am excited for this remix record?!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Robert should have enlisted the likes of Ulrich Schnauss, Robin Guthrie, Boards of Canada and Mogwai for the remixes.

What's with all the young kids? Imagine what the old pros could do to Cure songs. Robert, you continue to frustrate me.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Some of you are being total wankers about this.

All of the people remixing the songs are in bands that are massively relevant today. While the bands are arguably terrible, you're all dismayed about how The Cure have been receiving no press, no airplay, and have been deemed utterly irrelevant and inconsequential in today's music scene. By grabbing members of today's 4 current largest "alt. rock" bands ,it's doing more to expose The Cure and get their new material more attention than any half-baked Universal press release or stripped down promotion method.

And you complain about how you want people listening to The Cure for the sake of listening to The Cure alone, but stop being such a naive idealist because obviously that hasn't been working very well. 54 plays across America indicates that. If you want them to get noticed, this is the price you're going to have to pay. Just desserts.

Honestly, I think they would have been better getting remixes from Carlos D of Interpol, David Sitek of TV on the Radio, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Alison Goldfrapp. Yes it's preaching to the converted, but it would do more to recapture The Cure's casual art-rock fanbase than to dive into a totally new Top 40 modern rock crowd of disinterested 12 year olds, which is only going to take akin to pissing into an ocean.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Those are not the kind of remixes that I want of hear. Would have been excited for things like Junior Boys, Hot Chip, Burial (could have made a really cool Sleep When I'm Dead), and so on. This is a disappointment.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Ah, M83 could be the last one.

    The Only One (Junior Boys)
    Freakshow (Hot Chip)
    Sleep When I'm Dead (Burial)
    The Perfect Boy (M83)

How good is my taste, right? lol. And I gotta say, about pissing in the ocean, every little bit helps.

    ReplyDelete
  111. stiff, I'll give you credit for doing your research on the bands, but can you say 'hyperbole'??? In any event, relative to The Cure, they are a young lot with a very young fan base. And I don't for a single, solitary millisecond believe that the EP is anything more than a ploy to attractive kids to the dwindling fold.

Seriously, I hope it works, I really do. May droves of teens hear these remixes and become diehard Cure fans. May they be so great in number as to push the 'crotchety old parents'-types like me back and away. May Robert's fragile ego finally be mended.

It no longer matters to me. I've got plenty of music to soothe my savage old breast, most of which was not done, and for some this will be be sacrilege, by The Cure.

  114. There are definately some strong opinions here.
I'm not a fan of the ones doing the remixing either but I don't understands why getting your music out to a larger crowd is considered a sell out or pandering. I became a Cure fan in the early 80's when I was pretty young, it's about time the younger ones of today listened to better music anyway! ;)
I will be interested to hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I don't know for sure, but I suspect this is more the label's doing than Robert's. Maybe Robert approved it out of curiosity--but then again, he also sung on a Blink 182 song. But yeah, I won't be buying this.

I actually liked Mixed Up though. It's not a great album, but there was a time when I gave heavy rotation.
