Robert talks about radio

Robert has posted at the official site, talking about the 3 singles being in the Top Ten Sales chart in the US, despite very little airplay. Also confirms what most of us knew -that wasn't the cover image for Hypnagogic States. He also posted a reply, which will soon be buried under the typical nonsense, so here it is:

I FORGOT... 8/4/2008 11:57:58 AM - by CURE:ROBERT
NO-ONE LISTENS TO THE RADIO ANYMORE?

HA!
I CANT THINK OF A TIME I DIDNT WANT CURE MUSIC TO BE PLAYED OR HEARD...
AND I HAVE NEVER EXPECTED ANYONE ELSE TO LOVE IT BUT ME...
BUT ACTUALLY KNOWING CURE MUSIC EXISTS IS A NECESSARY PREREQUISITE TO MAKING THAT CHOICE!
(AND FOR THOSE REALLY MISSING IT...
THE SIMPLE POINT I AM MAKING IS:
"WE ARE NOT GETTING MUCH AIRPLAY IN AMERICA" ARE WE?!!)

PEACE AND JEDI ETC
RSX

  2. Again. I don't know why he is griping to the fans about the fact that its not being played on the radio in America.

Is The Mighty U supposed to handle publicity or are we?

If it really is supposed to be us, I'll start using those blackmail photographs I have of radio station owners in bed with transvestite prostitutes.

    That might help.

  3. I think he's pointing out what a complete failure my Support the Singles campaign has been. : )

    ReplyDelete
  4. He better not be. That had to have been tedious work to put all those radio stations and request phone numbers together. You do a lot of thankless work but you don't ever complain.

That's why you da man! :)

  5. Thank you DA. I was just joking. : )

  6. I think Robert just find the situation abysmal and wants to share his thoughts on this with us.
Basically, he is bitching about it, just like we bitch just about everything.

  7. Well Said RSx !!!!!!!!

    This is a complete failure.

At least here in Mexico City the singles have been a decent airplay.

Besides, would be good to have more airplays everywhere but in this cause it isn´t like this, the radiostations losses more than Cure.

Fortunately, we are loyal fans that prefer to listen our Cure music at house, job, car, portable devices, etc than into the lame radiostations.

Thay way we enjoy Cure music the most !!!.

Dont worry RSx, you make the best music of all time, so we never stop to listen it.

    :)

  9. I still think once the album is released the singles will get more attention. Give the promoters something to promote - you know?

  11. peace and jedi?" - LOL.

anguish - just leave it to craig and us. he's done a better job promoting the singles to radio stations more than Mighty U has.

i think if the cure self released their stuff.. it would still sell just as much as if it were under universal, if not more. they dont need a big label

  12. Craig, by the way, i don´t want to be misunderstood:

I meant that the U Music campaign to support the singles has been a complete disaster, under any reason i´m talking about your campaign.

I think you´d recived a bunch of mails giving you the radiostations info to try to make the single gets more airplays, so that´s proves that your campaign is worthy.

To the contrary, you know very well that your great effort for provide the best Cure info is priceless for all of us.

    :)

  13. At least Robert is a Jedi!

I really think it just boils down to the overall HORRIBLE taste in music that this country has. I mean, look at the success of 'American Idol'!!! WTF? If it's not hip-hop or bubblegum pop, it just doesn't get played in this "great" nation!

  14. I think that part of the problem is releasing singles every 30 days and expecting all of them to be played to death on the radio. I think this is the first time The Cure have tried this. In the past, I always remember there being a two, three, four month span between the release of singles. And I certainly don't remember them releasing four singles before they released the actual album.

I think they are just overloading the mainstream media. If they had spaced it out more, I'm betting they would have seen better results as far as air-time.

I certainly don't think its indication that Sleep When I'm Dead is an inferior song. If SWID was the first single released and The Only One was the third single released, I think The Only One would probably be suffering the same fate right now.

  15. I always knew Robert was a Jedi.

At least the singles are selling well. You can't ask for much more than that.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I always pictured Robert as more of a Sith Lord. : )

    ReplyDelete
  17. Porl is a Sith. Simon is a Han Solo. Jason is a Luke Skywalker look alike anyway so he is Jedi.

  18. I am biting my tongue until it bleeds to surpress the urge to make a crack about Jabba The Hut :)

  19. Craig, I have a little addendum to what I sent you recently that I'd like you to post, if possible. I'll be sending that in a moment.

  20. da, DON'T YOU DARE! ;)

well i'm not bloody well going to start listening to the radio now.
except for pandora. although inexplicably sometimes the cure shows up on my hall & oates radio instead of their own station. what's up with that...stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  21. i think what it boils down to is that i like hannah montana better.

  22. Dumb Anguish - let's not go there, okay?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I was just teasing. Seriously.

With all the Star Trek references, I just couldn't resist :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I know, I know.....but I do remember how you get tempted. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. DA: Now those are fightin' words. : )

Andrew: I always thought of Robert as the master and Porl as his apprentice. Darth Porl. : )

    ReplyDelete
  26. I never listen to the radio anymore so I understand whet he means !!!

  27. "V", your name always reminds me. And since we've delved into Science Fiction for a bit.

Anybody else remember an American series called "V"? About alien visitors from another world who eventually control the Earth in a fascist state?

And under their seemingly normal appearance, they were actually lizards who had come to steal our water and use humans for food.

Oh, I remember being 10 years old and thinking that program was just the coolest freaking thing ever.

The series opened with 50 alien mother ships settling in over 50 world cities. (I swear the movie Independence Day stole that idea from them)

    ReplyDelete
  28. DA: I loved V...and still do. : )
I just found my Member of The Resistance membership card the other day.

The first mini-series was the best.

  29. Oh that reminds me. When I was on holiday I found a shop that only sold Dr Who stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes. Definitely the first part was the best. Juliet Parrish. Boy did I ever have a crush on her.

Man, I think I have to watch that DVD tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Andrew: And where exactly was this shop? :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Andrew: Awesome! Did you take a photo? Did you buy anything?

    ReplyDelete
  33. When I was in London in 1996 I was so psyched to see Doctor Who stuff everywhere. In fact, just last night I was wearing the Dalek shirt I got on that trip. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. DA: Yeah, everyone was all hot and bothered by Diana, but I was in love with Julie. I couldn't understand what she ever saw in Mike Donovan. : )

  36. Andrew: That's so cool! It is now on my list of places to visit, should I ever end up in the vicinity. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I was going to buy an iflatable Dalek but I was saving my money for a shop a few doors down which sells all this crazy import stuff. The Dr Who shop really suprised me though. It had a crap load of Novels and memorabilia from Who history, not just the new stuff but like everything.

I found a news story from when the shop opened if you are interested

  38. I also remember in 2005 going to a Dr Who event which opened on Brighton pier to celebrate the new series. It was great. They set the whole place up to look like the inside of the Tardis and had props and costumes from the series. I still have the little programme book which I bought from there. Good Times.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you Andrew! An inflatable Dalek would be pretty cool.
So did you meet Chris E. or Billie Piper at that event?

    ReplyDelete
  40. i assume we are talking about the 1963-89 series?

ive only watched the 2005-2008 shows.. *hangs head in shame*

    ReplyDelete
  41. How do these discussions always end up with Dr. Who?? :)

They really should end up discussions about the PHT's! lololol

    ReplyDelete
  42. No I didn't meet any of the "human" cast as the event was going on all summer I'm sure the cast had better things to do.

Like I said though I did see a load of props which included Daleks, Slitheen and Autons. All of which actually appeared on screen. I saw a Tardis used in the show and costumes the Doctor and Rose used.

    ReplyDelete
  43. DJ: We are talking about all of the Doctors. : )

  44. Craig, I sent the e-mail.

  45. not the EP cover?

oh dear lord, robert must be mortified (?) to read all those comments that confirm just how gullible and slow-witted the majority of his fans are.

    ReplyDelete
  46. HH-

I'm gullible. Took me a while and explanation from a few on here to realize it wasn't the cover. But I was only gullible for a couple of days.

I jumped the gun on that one.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jedi, Robert? Are you trying to use the Jedi Mind tricks? :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. This is really a huge "things aren't like they used to be" moment for me.

    ReplyDelete
  49. May the Force Be with You....So Robert's having a Jedi Moment! Where's yoda when you need him? LOL!!!

OK why get all upset about the radio airplay in the US. I understand Robert's frustrated with the lack of air-play for SWID in the states but he shouldn't worry about it so much. Radio sucks and with the internet & downloads does it really matter how much they get played on the radio. Yeah I know it's still important but it's not the only factor in selling singles & The Cure have proved it with 3 top 10 singles in the Hot Singles Sales Chart!

    ReplyDelete
  50. And I just knew that flag picture RSX posted wasn't the EP cover! I'm so glad it's something different but I hope it's something cool like the covers for the singles.

  52. I think he is justifiably upset that his music isn't getting out there to fresh ears. I am sure it's great to have a solid audience for your art, but a big part of creating (for many) is being a part of wider culture, having something you want to share with new people. The Cure will endure... decades from now, new people will be discovering their music and loving it, but it's still got to be a major burn that legitimate accomplishment goes unnoticed in this now very corporate world.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I totally get Robert's point about the airplay. But I'm sure he's also very proud that the singles are doing so well without it!

I wonder if the radio stations he listens to are any better (if indeed he does)? Because if they are anything like the crap here, I wouldn't want to be part of it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It's nice to know that Robert is frustrated with the lack of US airplay, along with all of us.

Craig - the Doctor Who season finale was wicked! Have you caught up, yet?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Perhaps hes alluding to the Mighty U's Jedi like ability to completely ignore the singles while continuing to plough awfulness a la Pop Idol artists etc. There probably still in a huff Rob n co. didn't make 'proper' videos

    ReplyDelete
  56. @Sofia. LMAO! David Icke is never right.

    ReplyDelete
  57. well please explain V to me then (the tv show, not the lovely lady of this messageboard)!

    he's seen some things, man.
    and some stuff.
it's just a matter of time before the rothschilds and the pope and everybody else...the michelin man? crawl out of their skins and slither around.

i, for one, welcome our reptillian race overlords.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Aww, Sofia called me lovely! ;) *blush*

    ReplyDelete
  59. David Icke claimed to be the son of God....

Is it just me or does he himself look like a lizard?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Kate: No, my next episode is The Unicorn & The Butterfly. The Agatha Christie one. That's right, I've managed to watch only one new episode (The Doctor's Daughter) since the end of the tour. Pitiful! : )

    V: I second Sofia's statement. ; )
About you, not our lizard overlords!!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Craig: Awww... now I'm blushing yet again! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Craig: You have a great set of Doctor Who episodes to view, then! I am eager to hear your thoughts once you have seen them. Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  63. By the way, the new singles do get decent playtime on Sirius Sat Radio on Alt Nation and on Sirius Disorder (about 4-5 plays in 24hours for The Only One).

Cure gets good play on the amazing First Wave as well, but that's restricted to 70s-90s.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Kate: I watched The Unicorn & The Wasp last night, and I think it was my favorite so far from this season. I loved the mixture of comedy & mystery. Also loved the actress who played Agatha Christie. Thought she was excellent. And I loved Donna in this episode. She continues to impress me. Never thought I would even like her, and now she's one of my favorite companions.
Oh, I also loved all of the "fake" endings. Very funny.

Silence in the Library is up next, hope to watch that one tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Craig! What a terrific episode with Agatha Christie.

If I remember correctly, you are in for a doozy with The Library. That is the one with actress Alex Kingston, yes? Two-parter, and on the edge of your seat! Donna continues to shine. Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  66. The Libary two parter episodes are two of my favorites ever. I'm kind of glad Davies is stepping down to Moffat who is a much better writer IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Andrew: Same here. I'll always be grateful to Russell for bringing the show back, and making it what it is today, but I've grown a bit tired of his writing style.
And I love Moffatt's work so far.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah Moffats style is far more intelligent without distancing the core audience. Very good writer IMO. I heard he is writing the Tin Tin films for Speilberg and Peter Jackson.
