Close Encounters in Katowice, new photos for Rome, Milan, Marseille and Valencia.

And more: Close Encounter in Marseille, photos from Madrid.

New album article from Blender

Sorry, I missed this one a few weeks ago. From Blender:

In The Studio: Cure

Goth-rock mopesters the Cure get cheery on their 13th album.
Josh Eells
Blender February 19 2008

Attention all Cure fans: Better find some wood to knock on. For their 13th studio album (and first in four years) the U.K. miserablists are basically telling bad luck to suck it—prepping two discs comprising 13 tracks each, with “13” imagery running throughout. “I have never been superstitious,” singer Robert Smith says. “Full moons are my favorite.”

The godfathers of gloom have been recording the album since last summer, when they decamped to an old converted farmhouse—Smith calls it “lived-in”—in the English countryside. “There’s a garden outside, and stables,” he says. “It’s quite genteel.” It’s also just a few miles from the icy waters of the English Channel. Has Smith applied his waterproof guyliner and gone for a dip? “I’ve looked at it,” he says, chuckling. “I’m not much of a swimmer. Only after a few beers.”

Although the album features its fair share of despair (Smith calls “Christmas Without You,” about the death of a close friend, “one of the most unhappy things we’ve ever recorded”), he says it is, on the whole, “more upbeat.” The fastest songs are “manic psycho rock,” and “Don’t Say Anything” stars a colorful cast of aliens and freaks.

“It’s been a fun couple of months,” Smith says. “Certainly the most fun I’ve ever had in a studio.” Might the black-clad master of melancholy actually be approaching (gasp) happiness? He laughs. “I’ll be happy when it’s done.”

Robert helps Starter For 10

"Here's a cool article about the Penelope soundtrack and about how Robert made the soundtrack cool! (correction: the part about Robert is referring to the film Starter For 10, NOT Penelope.)

Excerpt:

And the film, set in the 1980s, had a "phenomenal soundtrack" featuring the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears, the Smiths and more.

"The story behind the soundtrack for that was that we couldn't afford such a great soundtrack because those tunes cost a lot of money," says McAvoy. "Morrissey doesn't really let his songs out for less than a ... lot of money, and neither do the Cure.

"But the lead singer for the Cure came along, saw the film, liked it so much and he was originally going to try and score some of the music, but it didn't work out due to other commitments, and he said, 'Yeah, you can have lots of our songs.'

"As soon as he did that, everybody from the '80s, including Morrissey, was like, 'Yeah, you can have our music. Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally. Have it cheap.' So it was great."

KC and Sunrise passwords

The pre-sale password for both KC and Sunrise is INBETWEEN. Thanks to Mark O. for getting it for all of us.

Also, Ticketmaster says The Cure will be using the "half house" setup for the Sunrise show. So be sure to check the seating chart before you let go of what would seem to be "bad" tickets when looking at the normal seating chart.

New Cure Merchandise

Probably old news, but I just noticed that The Cure Store has added a bunch of the new 4Tour merchandise for sale.

Article in Elegy magazine

"There is an interesting article in the new issue of french magazine ELEGY. That consists on history/live reviews since the first live show in France in 1979. With participation of Simon Huw Jones from AATT, or member of DRAGONS. Oh, by the way I participated in this review cause I
was interviewed concerning Bercy 89 (the second night) ;-)
Also we can find in the CD sampler with this magazine a cover of "Killing An Arab" by french artist called F.M. Not bad, not good."
(Thanks Yan)

"I read an article about that austrian band Whispers in the Shadow, they just released there first two records Laudanum and November, bothhighly recommended to Cure Fans (Faith, Pornography period) . Laudanum features a cover version of A Forest as an unreleased bonus track.

Cure forum changes

From Christian:
"If you haven't noticed recently, ceho.de has changed it's name to CURECONNECTIONS.
It is a rename to coincide with a revival of what became a quiet forum for a while. In the last two months, almost 4.000 new posts have been made with an additional 110 users joining in 2008 covering almost 330 new topics alone.
The downloads sections are regulary posted with quality shows and requests are taken readily for that obscure recording someone may have been hunting for.
We are running a musical challenge also. The likes of which hasn't been done on other Cure forums.
This is an invitation to all our more musical members to post a cover version of a Cure song.
We have had many fantastic songs posted already and the wide diversity of members also adds the possibility for technical advice etc. if requested.
This isn't a competition though. More a chance to see who is there and what sort of "take" on The Cure we all have.
With the 4Tour 2008, we hope to stay on top of events and post the latest recordings where possible.
Venue threads are set up so our members can arrange to meet up, share news & reviews on the event itself.
In addition, there is a thriving "off topic" section where folks can just talk about anything they like really.
Fans of The Cure have more in common than just the band and so be our guest and come along and "babble" if you like.
All that leaves to say is, we hope that you pay us a visit soon and help to extend a vibrant community where we all have the same passion. "

From Geri:
"last week some problems with the MFC forum occurred and it's permanently moved to a new home over at http://thecuremfc.com/forum
We're unable to make changes to the old forum, even to forward people to the new domain, so there still may be a few stragglers who are unaware of the move."
